Where to Buy Fountain Pen Ink in Ottawa–Gatineau (And What Most Stores Don't Carry)
Share
If you've been searching for fountain pen ink in Ottawa–Gatineau, you've probably noticed the same thing I did: the options are thinner than you'd expect for a city this size.
That's not a complaint — it's just the reality of a niche hobby in a mid-sized Canadian market. And honestly, it's part of why I opened Shosai.
This post is my honest take on the local landscape: what exists, what's missing, and where I think the gaps are. I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
The Local Picture
Ottawa–Gatineau has a handful of stationery and gift shops that carry writing instruments, and some of them do stock fountain pen supplies. You can find the expected names — Lamy, Pilot, Waterman, Parker — at a few locations, and that's genuinely useful if you need a cartridge refill or a reliable everyday ink without waiting for shipping.
But if you've moved past the entry-level stage and started looking for inks with real character — deep shading, vivid sheen, the kind of colour that makes you stop and look at the page — the local shelves get sparse quickly.
Artisan and boutique ink brands from Japan and Korea are essentially absent from Ottawa–Gatineau retail. Not underrepresented. Absent.
The same gap exists online. Canadian fountain pen shops exist, and some carry impressive Japanese selections — but most skew toward European and Japanese heritage brands. The newer wave of Korean ink makers, and some of the more experimental Japanese boutique labels, tend to fall through the cracks. For anyone in the NCR, even the best Canadian online options add shipping cost, wait time, and often still don't have what you're looking for.
That's the gap Shosai is here to fill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy boutique fountain pen ink locally in Ottawa–Gatineau?
For mainstream brands — Pilot Iroshizuku, Lamy, Waterman — yes, a few local shops carry them. For boutique and artisan inks from Japan and Korea, the honest answer is: not really, until now. Shosai (shosai.ca) is a Gatineau-based boutique stationery store specializing in exactly these brands, with local pickup available in the Ottawa–Gatineau area.
What ink brands does Shosai carry?
Shosai focuses on Japanese and Korean boutique inks that are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere in the NCR:
- Dominant Industry — Korean inks with a rigorous numbering system and a Pearl series inspired by the Impressionists (Monet, Van Gogh). One of the most collected boutique ink brands in the world right now.
- Tono & Lims — A Japanese-Korean collaborative brand known for deeply expressive, theme-driven collections with exceptional shading and sheen.
- Colorverse — Korean inks inspired by astronomy and physics, often released in dual-bottle sets with complementary colours.
- TAG Stationery (Takeda Jimuki) — Kyoto-based, including the Kyo Iro and Kyo No Oto series. Traditional Japanese colour palettes with a refined, understated character.
- Pilot Iroshizuku — The Japanese classic. Beautifully consistent, reliably well-behaved in any pen.
- Ferris Wheel Press — Canada's own premium ink brand, carried here with a curated selection.
Does Shosai carry glass pens?
Yes — including Matsubokkuri, a Japanese artisan studio run by glassworker Kiyoshi Matsumura, who has been handcrafting borosilicate glass pens since 2007. Each pen is made individually and varies slightly in shape and character. To our knowledge, Shosai is one of the only Canadian retailers carrying Matsubokkuri. (The listing is coming soon — reach out if you'd like to be notified.)
We also carry the Guitar by Teranishi Aurora Borealis glass pen series, which is already available in the shop.
Is there local pickup available?
Yes. Shosai offers local pickup in Gatineau with no minimum order. If you're in the Ottawa–Gatineau area and want to see an ink swatch in person before committing to a bottle, that's something I'm happy to arrange.
Does Shosai serve French-speaking customers?
Oui. Shosai is a bilingual shop — all product listings are available in both English and French, and you're welcome to reach out in either language.
How do I know what an ink actually looks like before buying?
Every ink carried at Shosai has been personally swatched by hand. When a listing describes a colour as having a green sheen over a dark burgundy base, that's not a distributor's description — it's what I saw on paper, on Tomoe River and Cosmo Air Light. Swatch photos are included with product listings, and I'm always happy to answer questions about specific inks before you buy.
What is a glass dip pen, and do I need one?
A glass dip pen is exactly what it sounds like: a pen made entirely of glass, dipped into ink rather than filled. You don't need one — but if you enjoy inks with strong shading or sheen, a glass nib picks up the full character of an ink in a way that's hard to replicate with a fountain pen. It's also a practical way to sample multiple inks without cleaning a pen between each one. Rinse, dry, dip.
Where to Go From Here
If you're in the Ottawa–Gatineau area and curious about any of the brands mentioned here, you're welcome to reach out or stop by for a local pickup. If you're elsewhere in Canada, Shosai ships coast to coast.
The shop is at shosai.ca. I'm also active on Instagram and in the Canadian fountain pen community online.
Happy writing.
