Opus 88 — Four Decades of Quiet Mastery
Opus 88 — Four Decades of Quiet Mastery
Not every great pen brand announces itself loudly. Since 1988, Opus 88's founder Michael Hsu has been one of the most respected figures in the global pen industry — and yet, for most of that time, his name appeared on none of the pens he made. For over four decades, Opus 88 operated as a trusted OEM and ODM manufacturer for other renowned fountain pen brands, building the technical foundations of pens that would go on to earn worldwide acclaim under someone else's logo. When Hsu finally put his own name on his work, the result was exactly what you would expect from someone who had spent a career perfecting the craft in silence.
The Name, the Number, the Mark
The name Opus was chosen deliberately: it is a declaration that the company works fluently across materials — brass, wood, shell, sterling silver, acrylic, ebonite, and more. The 88 is simply the year it all began. The symbols in the Opus 88 logo are the Chinese characters for the founder's family name, Hsu — a quiet signature embedded in plain sight, as understated as the brand itself.
Engineering as Philosophy
What distinguishes Opus 88 from other premium pen makers is not a single standout feature, but a consistent way of thinking about problems. Their pens use the eyedropper filling system — something experienced fountain pen users often prefer for its exceptional ink capacity — but Opus 88 did not simply adopt the format. They engineered a shut-off valve that seals ink above the nib, making the pen safer to carry and eliminating the thermal expansion issue that can push ink through the feed when an eyedropper barrel warms in the hand. It is the kind of solution that only comes from people who actually use the pens they build.
The shut-off valve is controlled by a knob at the end of the barrel, which regulates airflow and in turn ink flow. When closed, ink is held in the feed for short writing sessions; when open, it enables steady flow from the barrel to the nib for extended writing. The central rod connected to the valve can also be used to prime the feed — a small detail that reveals how thoroughly Opus 88 thinks through the writing experience from first fill to final word.
The Models
The Opus 88 lineup spans a range of distinct series, each with its own character: the colourful Koloro with its ebonite-and-resin construction, the semi-translucent Jazz, the large-format Omar, the transparent Demonstrator, the playful Fantasia, the pocket-sized Mini, and the elegant Harmony. Across all of them, the eyedropper filling system and shut-off valve remain constant — a unified philosophy expressed through varied form.
Opus 88 nibs run slightly larger than comparable Japanese nibs from brands like Pilot or Sailor, which is worth noting when selecting your nib size. For everyday correspondence or journaling, an extra-fine or fine nib will write closer to what most writers expect from a fine line.
