The philosopher's stone is the alchemist's ultimate object — the thing that turns one substance into another, that shouldn't exist and somehow does. Dominant Industry picked an appropriate name for the ink that opens their Alchemist Series: a colour that looks like nothing special indoors, then turns into something else entirely the moment it meets the sun.

Dominant Industry Alchemist C01 Philosopher's Stone is a 25ml calligraphy ink, first in the Alchemist Series' Color-Changing sub-line, alongside Alexandrite, Moonstone, and Seraphinite. Made in small batches in Paju, South Korea, it carries a pale minty base with fine silver shimmer that shifts dramatically under UV light.

Available at Shosai (shosai.ca) in Gatineau / Ottawa — with in-store pickup (J9J 0K6) and Canada-wide shipping.

The Colour Change

Indoors

Away from direct light, Philosopher's Stone settles into a light, minty green carrying a fine silver shimmer — soft, pale, and easy to underestimate at first glance.

In Sunlight

Step into direct sun and the shift happens within seconds: the pale mint gives way to shades of pink, magenta, and deep reddish-purple, with the exact depth of colour depending on how strong the light is. Reviewers describe the transformation as genuinely magical to watch in real time — a bright, light green sliding into a deep maroon-purple as the ink catches the sun. Move back indoors, and the colour gradually fades back toward its original mint tone.

A Practical Note

Because the base colour runs pale, Philosopher's Stone is not the easiest ink for long passages meant to be read without sunlight present — some users note needing to write near a window or read quickly while the colour is still shifted to catch the full effect. That said, this is exactly what makes it a favourite for secret or surprise messages: text that looks unremarkable indoors and reveals itself in full colour outside.

Before You Fill Your Pen

Philosopher's Stone is a dip pen and brush ink only. It is not intended for fountain pens, and filling one with it is not recommended — the shimmer and colour-shifting pigment are built for the open flow of a dip nib, glass pen, or brush, not a fountain pen's finer feed system.

Practical Notes

Flow & Dry Time

Philosopher's Stone has a moderate flow and dries considerably slower than a typical fountain pen ink — around 240 seconds on a medium nib on Rhodia paper. Plan for extra drying time before handling written pages.

Handling

Shake the bottle well before each use — the colour-changing pigment settles at the bottom over time, and uneven mixing can leave parts of a piece more vividly shifted than others. For longer writing sessions, stirring periodically helps keep the effect consistent throughout.

Recommended Paper & Tools

Smooth, ink-friendly paper — dedicated calligraphy paper or similar surfaces — lets both the shimmer and the colour transformation read clearly. Pair it with dip pens, glass pens, or brushes for the fullest effect.

Recommended Uses

  • Secret letters and hidden messages — an ink that looks unassuming indoors and reveals a completely different colour in daylight
  • Outdoor art journaling — the shift is immediate and dramatic in direct sunlight
  • Decorative lettering and creative projects — better suited to titles, accents, and short pieces than dense pages of text

About the Alchemist Series

The Alchemist Series is Dominant Industry's collection of specialty calligraphy inks built around transformation, myth, and materials that behave differently than ordinary ink. Philosopher's Stone belongs to the Color-Changing sub-line, alongside Alexandrite, Moonstone, and Seraphinite — inks designed to shift under UV exposure and return to their original state indoors, while the Pearl sub-line (Apatura Metis, Unicorn) relies on glitter and the Standard sub-line (Blue Rose, Pink Robin) on colour alone.

About Dominant Industry

Dominant Industry is a South Korean ink studio based in Paju, working in small batches and building each release around a specific visual idea. Their inks are made through an additive process using reflective and transparent pigments, aiming for what the brand calls "bottled light" — and in the case of the Alchemist Color-Changing line, colour that quite literally responds to the light around it.
