Dominant Industry Alchemist C03 Alexandrite is a 25ml calligraphy ink from the Alchemist Series, part of the Color-Changing sub-line alongside Moonstone, Philosopher's Stone, and Seraphinite. Made in small batches in Paju, South Korea, it carries fine pearl shimmer through a base that shifts across the colour spectrum depending on how much UV light it's catching.

The Colour Change

Indoors

Away from direct sunlight, Alexandrite settles into a cool, minty aquamarine-blue — fresh and slightly electric-looking, with a fine pearl shimmer that reads almost white in the bottle but takes on more sparkle once it's on the page.

In Sunlight

Step into direct sun and the shift happens within seconds: mint and aquamarine give way to a deep reddish-purple, moving through green, blue, and violet along the way depending on the angle and intensity of the light. It is, by every account we've found, a genuinely difficult colour to photograph — reviewers consistently note that the ink looks more vivid and alive in person than any picture manages to convey. Bring the writing back indoors, and the colour eases back to its original minty tone, ready to shift again.

A Note on Legibility

Because the base colour runs light and cool rather than dark and saturated, Alexandrite is better suited to shorter pieces, accents, and decorative lettering than to long passages meant for easy reading. It rewards being seen rather than simply read.

Before You Fill Your Pen

Alexandrite is a dip pen and brush ink only. It is not intended for fountain pens, and filling one with it is not recommended — the shimmer and colour-shifting pigment are built for the open flow of a dip nib, glass pen, or brush, not a fountain pen's finer feed system.

Flow & Handling

Alexandrite has a smooth, well-behaved flow suited to calligraphy work, with a moderate dry time. Shake the bottle before use to keep the pearl particles evenly distributed.

Recommended Paper & Tools

The colour shift and shimmer both show best on smooth, ink-friendly paper — dedicated calligraphy paper or similar surfaces let the full green-to-purple range come through clearly. Pair it with dip pens, glass pens, or brushes to bring out the shimmer alongside the colour change.
