Every alchemist's collection needs a unicorn — the one ingredient that is more legend than substance, prized for magic no one can quite explain. Dominant Industry built this ink around that idea: a colour that shifts and layers rather than sitting still on the page, meant to feel like a rare and fated encounter rather than an ordinary bottle of ink.

Dominant Industry Alchemist C05 Unicorn is a 25ml calligraphy ink from the Alchemist Series, part of its Pearl sub-line alongside Apatura Metis. Made in small batches at the brand's studio in Paju, South Korea, it pairs a vivid blue base with blue and green glitter, and a dual-shading effect that shifts as the ink dries.

The Colour

Base & Dual-Shading

Unicorn opens on a vivid blue base, and as it dries, indigo and purple tones begin to surface within the same stroke — the dual-shading effect at the heart of this ink. Dominant Industry describes the overall palette as moving between pastel purple, blue, and pink; in practice, the colour tends to read deeper and more saturated than "pastel" suggests, closer to a rich, jewel-toned blue-violet than a soft wash. It's a colour that rewards a closer look rather than a glance — one that changes character between the wet ink, the drying edge, and the fully dried line.

The Glitter

Unicorn carries blue and green glitter suspended through the base — a fine, star-like shimmer rather than a heavy sparkle, closer to light catching on a night sky than an obvious glitter ink. The effect is present but understated, adding a quiet layer of interest rather than dominating the colour underneath. Shake the bottle gently before use to bring the glitter back into even suspension.

Before You Fill Your Pen

Unicorn is a dip pen and brush ink only. Like the rest of the Alchemist Series glitter and colour-changing lines, it is not intended for fountain pens, and filling a fountain pen with it is not recommended — the glitter is built for the open flow of a dip nib, glass pen, or brush rather than a fountain pen's finer feed.

Bottle

Unicorn comes in Dominant Industry's signature 25ml teardrop-shaped glass bottle with a thick base that shows off the ink's colour and glitter — a bottle built as much for the shelf as for the desk. The wide 18mm opening accommodates most dip pens and glass pens comfortably.

Recommended Paper & Tools

Because the dual-shading effect depends on wet-to-dry contrast, Unicorn performs best on smooth, ink-friendly paper where the drying edge is clearly visible — Rhodia, calligraphy paper, or similar surfaces. Pair it with a dip pen, glass pen, or brush to bring out both the shading and the glitter fully.
