Dominant Industry Alchemist C07 Blue Rose is a 25ml calligraphy ink from the Alchemist Series, made in small batches at Dominant Industry's studio in Paju, South Korea. The Alchemist collection is built around a single question: what would an alchemist's workshop smell, look, and feel like — and what colours would emerge from the cauldron? Blue Rose is the collection's answer to impossible blue: the colour of flower petals steeped in an imaginary potion, a deep indigo that begins soft and opens, with layering, into something far more dramatic.

The Colour

How It Reads on the Page

Blue Rose is a deep, vibrant indigo — not a navy and not a pure blue, but something between the two, with warmth underneath the surface that makes it difficult to pin down in a photograph. Writers who have used it often note that it looks different on the page than in any digital image of it: warmer, more alive, with a velvety quality that flat colour reproduction struggles to capture.

The ink builds as you layer it. A single light wash reads as a soft, romantic blue; multiple strokes over the same area deepens it toward a dramatic, spellbinding hue — closer to the colour of something mysterious steeping in water than anything you would call ordinary ink.

Shading

Blue Rose shows shading across all stroke weights, making it particularly rewarding for calligraphy styles that rely on contrast between hairlines and full-pressure swells. The tonal range is not extreme, but it is consistent and visible even in smaller lettering, giving the ink a sense of depth that flat blues rarely achieve.

No Shimmer, No Sheen

Blue Rose is a Standard Series ink — no shimmer, no colour shift, no special-effects particles. What you see is what you get, and what you get is a very good, deeply saturated blue with a quiet elegance that does not need embellishment.

Before You Fill Your Pen

Blue Rose is designed for dip pens, calligraphy nibs, glass pens, and brushes. Filling it into a fountain pen is not recommended. The formula is optimised for dip-pen calligraphy, where the ink's concentration and flow behaviour allow the shading and depth to develop correctly. Getting the Best Results

Paper

On smooth, ink-friendly surfaces — Rhodia, Tomoe River, dedicated calligraphy paper — Blue Rose's shading gradient is at its most visible and the indigo base holds cleanly without bleeding. The colour also behaves well on textured calligraphy vellum, where the slight tooth adds visual interest to broader strokes.

Tools

Blue Rose is suited to copperplate and pointed pen nibs, broad-edge calligraphy nibs, glass pens, and soft-tip brushes. The shading becomes most expressive in nibs that flex or that naturally create a wet-to-dry variation across the stroke.

About Dominant Industry

Dominant Industry was founded in Paju, South Korea, with a focus on small-batch ink production and an approach that treats colour as a material rather than a data point. Rather than working from a standardised colour chart, the studio develops each ink around a specific visual or narrative idea.
