Dominant Industry Pearl 012 Winter Night is a 25ml fountain pen ink from the Pearl Series, hand-crafted in small batches at Dominant Industry's studio in Paju, South Korea. Built around the idea of bottled light, the Pearl Series pairs richly pigmented bases with fine, eco-friendly shimmer particles, designed to be used with medium or broad nibs to avoid clogging. Winter Night takes its inspiration from the depth and stillness of a winter evening sky — a dark, immersive blue-black carrying an unexpected warmth beneath the surface.

Base Colour

Winter Night opens as a deep blue-black, a dark, saturated tone that reads close to black on the page while carrying a distinct blue undertone in lighter, thinner strokes. It evokes the particular quality of a winter night sky: not pure black, but a deep, enveloping darkness with colour still inside it.

Shimmer

Winter Night carries a purple shimmer with silver and iridescent qualities — the particles catch light with a cool, pearlescent metallic quality that surfaces most clearly in large swatches and wetter writing. The effect is subtle in fine-nib lines and becomes a genuine shimmer in broader, more saturated strokes. The shimmer particles are made from eco-friendly materials and are fine (up to 50 microns) with low cohesion, so they move cleanly through standard feeds — shake the bottle well before each fill to keep them evenly suspended. 

Sheen

Winter Night reveals a brown sheen in large swatches and heavily saturated areas, surfacing as a warm brown-gold glow where the ink pools thickest. The sheen is present but on the subtle side, making it a secondary effect rather than a dominant one — notable on premium paper and in large brush or dip-pen work. 

Shading

Winter Night shows low shading, a gentle shift in tone across a stroke that adds a quiet sense of depth without pulling the colour away from its dark blue-black character.

Winter Night has an average flow and dries in approximately 30 seconds on a medium nib on Rhodia paper. Regular cleaning of the nib and feed is recommended to prevent shimmer particle build-up over extended use. 

Water Resistance

Winter Night offers moderate water resistance — not fully waterproof, but with enough pigment density to hold up to light moisture exposure.

How to Get the Most Out of Winter Night

Recommended Paper

Winter Night performs best on premium, shimmer-friendly papers such as Tomoe River and Rhodia, where the purple shimmer sits cleanly on the surface and the brown sheen develops at the edges of saturated strokes. On standard copy paper, expect some feathering and bleed-through in larger nib sizes.

Recommended Nibs

Because of its shimmer content, medium or broad nibs are recommended over fine or extra-fine, both to keep the particles flowing smoothly and to let the purple shimmer and brown sheen develop fully.
