Dominant Industry Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe — Golden Brown, Gold Shimmer Fountain Pen Ink (25ml)

Dominant Industry Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe is a 25ml shimmer fountain pen ink from the Painter Series — Dominant Industry's art-historical sub-series within the Pearl Collection, dedicated to shimmer inks inspired by the works of the great painters. Pearl 029 draws its palette from J.M.W. Turner's 1826 painting The Harbour of Dieppe — one of the most celebrated seascape works of the Romantic era, in which Turner captured the harbour of the Normandy port town bathed in the warm, hazy golden light of morning. The ink translates that atmospheric warmth directly: an unsaturated golden brown base that deepens to a rich amber-brown at heavier ink deposits, paired with warm gold shimmer particles that evoke the scattered morning light across Turner's harbour scene.

Part of Dominant Industry's Pearl Collection and the fourth entry in the Painter Series — following three Monet entries — Pearl 029 marks the series' first departure from Impressionism into the Romantic tradition, drawing from the work of Turner, the painter most often credited as a precursor to Impressionist light. The golden brown base is intentionally unsaturated and warm, consistent with Turner's characteristic atmospheric haze. The medium shading adds meaningful tonal depth, transitioning from pale golden-orange in fine strokes to a richer, deeper brown-amber at pooling points. There is no sheen — the gold shimmer and the shading together carry the ink's full visual complexity. The bottle continues the Pearl Collection's signature presentation: a 25ml glass bottle with a cloth bag and ink-assist straw.

Available at Shosai (shosai.ca) in Gatineau / Ottawa — with in-store pickup (J9J 0K6) and Canada-wide shipping.

What Makes Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe Different

The Harbor of Dieppe is unusual in the Painter Series for combining meaningful shading with gold shimmer — a pairing that produces two distinct kinds of visual depth simultaneously. The medium shading provides tonal depth: a visible transition from lighter to darker values within each stroke that gives the ink a painterly, dimensional character consistent with Turner's atmospheric layering. The gold shimmer provides luminous depth: metallic particles that catch the light and evoke the reflective quality of water and sky in Turner's harbour scene.

The golden brown base is also distinctive within the Pearl Collection as a whole. Warm unsaturated browns and golden ambers are rare in fountain pen shimmer inks; most shimmer inks favour cooler, more saturated hues. The Harbor of Dieppe occupies a colour space that evokes autumn, aged paper, and warm candlelight as much as it does a Romantic seascape — a versatile, warm, and richly atmospheric colour that suits a wide range of writing contexts beyond its art-historical inspiration.

Colour Profile

Base Colour

Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe is an unsaturated golden brown — a warm, mellow colour that reads as a soft orange-brown or golden amber depending on the nib size and paper. In the bottle, it presents as a warm golden-tan with visible depth. On the page, it dries to a gentle, warm golden brown that is most legible and most richly coloured at medium to broad nib sizes; at fine or extra-fine sizes, the unsaturated base may appear quite pale and light. Writers describe the base as golden brown, amber, orange-brown, or warm tan — a colour with the specific quality of Turner's morning harbour light: warm, hazy, and atmospheric rather than vivid or saturated.

Shading

Medium. The Harbor of Dieppe exhibits meaningful tonal variation between lighter and denser areas of each stroke — a clear gradient from pale golden-orange in hairline strokes to a noticeably deeper, richer brown-amber at pooling points and stroke edges. The shading is one of the ink's defining characteristics, adding a painterly, dimensional quality to the warm base that is entirely consistent with Turner's atmospheric layering technique. On premium papers with medium to broad nibs, the shading transition is most apparent and most rewarding.

Shimmer

Gold metallic shimmer particles, medium to high intensity. The gold shimmer is warm and abundant — consistent with the ink's golden brown base, deepening rather than contrasting it. The effect is of warm light scattered across a textured surface, evoking the specific quality of Turner's harbour light as it reflects across water, stone, and sail. The shimmer is clearly visible under light and particularly spectacular at broader nib sizes where the ink deposits more generously on the page.

Shake gently before each use to redistribute settled shimmer particles evenly throughout the ink.

Sheen

None. The Harbor of Dieppe does not develop a traditional metallic sheen on smooth papers. The visual complexity of the ink is carried entirely by the golden brown base, the medium shading, and the gold shimmer — three elements that work together to produce a richly atmospheric result without a sheen component.

Ink Properties at a Glance

Flow

Average. Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe flows at a consistent, reliable rate through standard converters and cartridge-converter systems — well-balanced across a range of pen and nib combinations. As with all shimmer inks, regular pen maintenance is recommended to prevent particle accumulation in the feed.

Dry Time

Approximately 20 seconds on quality paper under normal conditions (medium nib on Rhodia) — notably faster than most Pearl Collection inks, making The Harbor of Dieppe one of the more practical entries in the series for everyday use.

Water Resistance

Low. Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe is a water-based dye ink with shimmer particle suspension and no meaningful water resistance. It will run or fade when exposed to moisture and is not suitable for documents requiring archival longevity.

Feathering and Bleed-Through

No feathering on quality papers (Rhodia, Tomoe River, Leuchtturm). Moderate show-through on thinner papers; no bleed-through on quality papers. On standard 20lb copy paper, some feathering and light bleed-through may occur.

How to Get the Most Out of Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe

Shake before use. Shimmer particles settle at the bottom of the bottle between uses. A gentle shake before filling ensures even particle distribution and consistent shimmer expression throughout your writing session.

Recommended Paper

Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe rewards smooth, slow-absorbing papers that allow the gold shimmer particles to develop fully and the shading gradient to express itself:

  • Tomoe River (52gsm or 68gsm) — the gold standard for shimmer inks; the warm golden brown base reads at full saturation; shading gradient most visible and most expressive; gold shimmer develops fully on the surface
  • Rhodia / Clairefontaine — consistent, dependable results; shading clearly visible; shimmer well-expressed; fast 20-second dry time makes this a practical everyday pairing
  • Leuchtturm1917 — tested and reliable; good shimmer development; the warm base reads particularly well on cream-toned Leuchtturm paper
  • Midori MD Paper — smooth surface supports good shimmer development and shading expression; a reliable everyday option

Avoid highly absorbent papers (standard copy paper). Feathering and light bleed-through may occur, and shimmer expression will be suppressed.

Recommended Nibs

  • Medium to Broad nibs — the primary recommendation; more ink on the page activates the gold shimmer fully and allows the shading gradient to develop from pale golden-orange to rich brown-amber; the unsaturated base reads with more presence and legibility at broader sizes
  • Stub or Italic nibs — the variation between thick and thin strokes showcases the shading gradient dramatically and gives the gold shimmer a dynamic, painterly expression; particularly effective for calligraphic and artistic writing inspired by Romantic-era aesthetics
  • Eyedropper pens — an excellent pairing; high ink volume and consistent flow maximise shimmer expression and ensure even gold particle distribution
  • Dip pens — well-suited to The Harbor of Dieppe's warm, painterly character; generous dip pen flow activates shimmer and shading fully; particularly effective for Romantic-inspired illustration and warm-toned artistic work
  • Fine nibs — the base colour is legible but light and pale; shimmer present but less abundant; shading less visible; functional but does not fully showcase the ink's warmth and depth
  • Extra-fine nibs — not recommended; base colour may appear too pale; risk of particle clogging; shimmer largely suppressed

Pen Maintenance

As with all shimmer inks, flush your pen every 2–4 weeks to prevent metallic particle accumulation in the feed and nib channel. Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe is pH neutral and safe for resin and celluloid pens. Regular cleaning is essential for long-term pen health.

Recommended Uses

  • Art-historical and Romantic-era inspired writing — the direct connection to Turner's The Harbour of Dieppe makes this ink a natural choice for art history enthusiasts, admirers of Turner and the Romantic tradition, and anyone drawn to the warm atmospheric quality of early nineteenth-century painting
  • Autumn and winter writing — the warm golden brown and gold shimmer are an ideal pairing for autumn journaling, winter correspondence, and any writing context where warmth, depth, and a seasonal richness are the goal; a natural companion to Pearl 024 October Leaves within the Pearl Collection
  • Calligraphy and artistic lettering — the medium shading and gold shimmer create a richly textured, painterly page quality; stub and italic nibs bring out the ink's full tonal range; particularly effective for warm-toned decorative lettering
  • Journaling and personal writing — the warm, unsaturated golden brown suits reflective writing, personal journals, and any writing context where an ink with quiet depth and warm character adds richness without demanding attention
  • Art and mixed media — compatible with dip pens and brush application; the gold shimmer and shading add a warm, Romantic-era quality to illustrated pages and mixed media work
  • Fountain pen photography and swatching — the warm golden brown photographs beautifully under natural light; the gold shimmer is vivid and warm in macro shots; the shading gradient is most dramatic on Tomoe River with broader nibs

About the Painter Series

The Painter Series is Dominant Industry's art-historical sub-series within the Pearl Collection — a group of shimmer inks inspired by the works of the great painters of the Western tradition. Each Painter Series ink translates the colour language of a specific painting or artistic period into a fountain pen ink with shimmer, sheen, and tonal complexity. Pearl 029 The Harbor of Dieppe is the fourth entry in the Painter Series and the first to draw from the Romantic tradition rather than Impressionism — inspired by J.M.W. Turner, the painter whose luminous atmospheric treatment of light and water is widely regarded as a direct precursor to the Impressionist movement. Each bottle is presented with a cloth bag and ink-assist straw.

About the Pearl Collection

The Pearl Collection is Dominant Industry's dedicated shimmer ink line — a series of inks formulated around suspended metallic particles in richly coloured dye bases. Each ink in the Pearl Collection is designed to deliver a layered optical experience: a strong base colour, visible shimmer, and in many cases a complementary sheen. The Painter Series represents the Pearl Collection at its most conceptually ambitious — shimmer inks that carry both visual and art-historical depth.
