The Colour

Base Tone

Soleil Couchant à Étretat is a medium grey with cool blue undertones — quiet and restrained on the page, closer to water under an overcast sky than a bold, attention-seeking colour. One reviewer described the subtle grey-blue variation as genuinely looking like water, which captures the ink's mood well.

Shading

This ink shows medium, genuinely lovely shading, developing purple tones as it separates from grey to darker areas of pooling. On some papers, such as Iroful, the shading can become quite dramatic; on Rhodia and Midori it performs well, while Tomoe River tends to mute the effect. In areas of heavy pooling, a faint hint of pink can also emerge — a subtle, understated detail rather than a dramatic one.

Sheen & Shimmer

Soleil Couchant à Étretat has no shimmer — this is the Standard version, distinct from its Pearl-series companion. Sheen is minimal to none; the ink's character comes from its shading and colour separation rather than any metallic effect.

A Practical Note on Flow

This ink runs on the drier side, and a small number of reviewers have found it prone to hard starts or inconsistent flow in fine or extra-fine nibs, particularly with drier-writing pens. It performs noticeably better in medium nibs and wetter-flowing pens, where the dry formula is balanced out and the shading has room to develop properly. If you're choosing a pen specifically for this ink, lean toward medium or broader, and avoid pairing it with an already-dry writer.
