Monet spent years returning to the same stretch of Normandy coastline, painting the chalk cliffs of Étretat under shifting light at every hour and season. Soleil Couchant à Étretat takes its colour from one of those paintings — the moment the sun drops low over water and grey turns quietly, imperceptibly, toward violet.
Dominant Industry Standard 120 Soleil Couchant à Étretat is a 25ml fountain pen ink from the brand's Painter Series, made in small batches in Paju, South Korea. It's the Standard companion to Les Falaises à Étretat, a shimmering Pearl ink released as part of the same Monet-inspired set — together, the pair captures two moments of light along the same coastline.
Available at Shosai (shosai.ca) in Gatineau / Ottawa — with in-store pickup (J9J 0K6) and Canada-wide shipping.
The Colour
Base Tone
Soleil Couchant à Étretat is a medium grey with cool blue undertones — quiet and restrained on the page, closer to water under an overcast sky than a bold, attention-seeking colour. One reviewer described the subtle grey-blue variation as genuinely looking like water, which captures the ink's mood well.
Shading
This ink shows medium, genuinely lovely shading, developing purple tones as it separates from grey to darker areas of pooling. On some papers, such as Iroful, the shading can become quite dramatic; on Rhodia and Midori it performs well, while Tomoe River tends to mute the effect. In areas of heavy pooling, a faint hint of pink can also emerge — a subtle, understated detail rather than a dramatic one.
Sheen & Shimmer
Soleil Couchant à Étretat has no shimmer — this is the Standard version, distinct from its Pearl-series companion. Sheen is minimal to none; the ink's character comes from its shading and colour separation rather than any metallic effect.
A Practical Note on Flow
This ink runs on the drier side, and a small number of reviewers have found it prone to hard starts or inconsistent flow in fine or extra-fine nibs, particularly with drier-writing pens. It performs noticeably better in medium nibs and wetter-flowing pens, where the dry formula is balanced out and the shading has room to develop properly. If you're choosing a pen specifically for this ink, lean toward medium or broader, and avoid pairing it with an already-dry writer.

Recommended Uses
- Art journaling and Impressionist-inspired writing — a genuinely atmospheric grey-blue for anyone drawn to Monet's coastal palette
- Swatching and shading demonstrations — a strong example of understated, non-flashy shading done well
- Letters and reflective writing — a calm, considered colour suited to slower, more deliberate correspondence
About the Painter Series
The Painter Series is Dominant Industry's collection inspired by Impressionist masterworks, pairing complex, multi-toned inks with the artists and paintings that inspired them. This release draws from Claude Monet's studies of Étretat, a coastal town in northern France that Monet returned to again and again to capture how light changed its cliffs throughout the day and across the seasons.
About Dominant Industry
Dominant Industry is a South Korean ink studio based in Paju, dedicated to small-batch production and colours drawn from natural light, landscape, and — in the case of the Painter Series — fine art. Each release is built around a specific visual reference point, aiming for what the brand describes as "bottled light."
