Mucha painted the moon as a woman, half-lost in her own soft light, part of a series depicting the stars and celestial bodies in the ornamental, dreamlike style that defined Art Nouveau. The Moon takes its colour from that same quiet mood — the feeling that settles in after dark, once the noise of the day has gone.

Dominant Industry Standard 122 The Moon is a 25ml fountain pen ink from the brand's Painter Series, made in small batches in Paju, South Korea. It's the fifth chapter of the series and the third dedicated to Alphonse Mucha, released alongside its companion ink, The Polar Star (No. 123), as a joint tribute to the Czech Art Nouveau master.

Available at Shosai (shosai.ca) in Gatineau / Ottawa — with in-store pickup (J9J 0K6) and Canada-wide shipping.

The Colour

Base Tone

The Moon is a warm blue-black — deep, velvety, and carrying subtle violet undertones rather than reading as a flat, cold navy. Some describe it as a muted blue-teal with real character; others as a dusty, moody blue-black that shifts toward blue-green in lighter areas and deepens toward near-black where the ink pools. Dominant Industry describes it simply: quiet emotions settling beneath moonlight, a gentle warmth rising from calm darkness with every layered stroke.

Shading

The Moon shows genuinely lovely shading — reviewers specifically note that the tonal range remains visible even in extra-fine nibs, which is unusual for an ink this dark. Lighter areas lean toward teal-grey, while pooled or saturated strokes deepen into a rich, near-black blue.

Sheen

In larger swabs and areas of heavier ink, The Moon reveals a subtle sheen — described variously as a faint red glow or a soft black-copper cast, depending on paper and lighting. It's understated rather than dramatic, a quiet detail rather than the ink's main feature.

Shimmer

The Moon has no shimmer. It's a Standard Series ink, and its character comes entirely from tone, shading, and that faint sheen rather than any glitter or metallic particles.

Ink Properties at a Glance

Flow

A smooth, moderately balanced flow — neither especially dry nor overly wet — suited to fountain pens, calligraphy, and drawing alike.

Water Resistance

Non-water-resistant; not suited to documents requiring permanence.

Formula & Safety

A dye-based ink, pH-neutral and safe for resin and celluloid fountain pens. No fragrance, no fluorescence, and not an iron gall formula.

Recommended Uses

  • Daily journaling and formal correspondence — a sophisticated, legible blue-black with more depth than a standard bottle ink
  • Night, moon, and Art Nouveau-themed writing — a natural fit for anything referencing Mucha's ornamental style or the quiet mood of night
  • Swatching and shading demonstrations — a strong example of tonal range that holds up even in fine nib sizes

About the Painter Series

The Painter Series is Dominant Industry's collection inspired by great works of art, pairing complex, atmospheric inks with the artists and paintings behind them. This release draws from Alphonse Mucha, the Czech painter whose Art Nouveau illustrations, advertisements, and decorative panels remain some of the era's most recognisable work — Dominant Industry created The Moon and The Polar Star as a tribute to what they describe as "the brilliant son of the Czech people."

About Dominant Industry

Dominant Industry is a South Korean ink studio based in Paju, dedicated to small-batch production and colours drawn from natural light, landscape, and — in the case of the Painter Series — fine art. Each release is built around a specific visual reference point, aiming for what the brand describes as "bottled light."
