The Guitar Glass Dip Pen Aurora Borealis is a handcrafted writing instrument from Teranishi Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. — a Japanese manufacturer with over a century of ink and stationery expertise, founded in Osaka in 1916. Part of Guitar's glass pen lineup, the Aurora Borealis pairs a precision-made hard glass nib with a marbled acrylic barrel that swirls with colour, each one subtly unique by virtue of its handmade construction.

Design & Materials

The Aurora Borealis takes its name from the luminous, flowing patterns worked into its transparent acrylic resin barrel. Three colour variants are available — Aqua Blue, Aqua Pink, and Aqua Purple — each featuring translucent swirling marble patterns that shift in the light. The screw-on acrylic cap protects the glass nib during storage and transport, making this pen more practical for everyday desk use than traditional uncapped glass pens.

The Glass Nib

The nib is handmade from hard glass, ground and shaped to form a series of fine spiral channels that hold and deliver ink through capillary action. Unlike a fountain pen, the Aurora Borealis is a dip pen: the nib is dipped briefly into an ink bottle before writing, then drawn across the page. The spiral channel design allows for a longer writing run per dip than a simple pointed nib, and the smooth glass surface produces a distinctive, gliding line quality.

The glass nib is compatible with water-based dye inks, pigment inks, and shimmer inks — making it an ideal tool for ink sampling, calligraphy, illustration, and expressive writing. Replacement nibs are available separately; please note that we do not currently stock them at Shosai, but we are happy to assist you in sourcing one if needed.

Care & Cleaning

Cleaning the Aurora Borealis is straightforward. After use, rinse the nib under cool running water until the ink runs clear, then gently blot dry with a soft cloth or tissue. For stubborn residue, a soft brush can be used to clean the spiral channels. The nib and barrel are fully separable for thorough cleaning. Avoid soaking the acrylic barrel for extended periods.

Variants

The Aurora Borealis is available in three colour variants:

Aqua Blue (GLAA-AQBL) — translucent blue with white and aqua marble swirls
Aqua Pink (GLAA-AQPK) — translucent pink with rose and white marble swirls
Aqua Purple (GLAA-AQPU) — translucent purple with violet and lavender marble swirls

Each pen is handmade; marble patterns vary slightly between individual pieces.
