A Timeless Silhouette, Four Ways

The Opus 88 Classic Jazz is where the line's cigar-shaped design started — a slightly more tapered, traditional take than the brand's other demonstrators, paired with a mottled, tortoise-like acrylic that gives each color depth rather than flatness. Black resin caps, grip sections, and end caps frame the design in every colorway, letting the semi-translucent body carry the color story: Blue reads as a sea-glass aqua streaked with darker currents, Green shifts between moss and emerald depending on the light, Amber glows warm like tortoiseshell, and Red runs deep and smoldering. Whichever you choose, the black-and-color pairing gives the pen a more polished, professional look than Opus 88's fully transparent demonstrators.

Design & Construction

The Classic Jazz follows a cigar-shaped silhouette with a tapered body and a larger cap sized to suit the #6 nib. Capped, the pen measures approximately 151.2 mm; the body alone is approximately 133.2 mm, with the cap adding approximately 69.6 mm — and unlike many Opus 88 demonstrators, the Classic Jazz can be posted for a longer writing length. Grip diameter is approximately 11.2 mm, and the pen weighs approximately 28 g. A polished chrome spring-metal clip completes the design, and the semi-translucent body lets you check both your ink level and nib at a glance, even with the cap on.

Eyedropper Filling System & Shut-Off Valve

The Classic Jazz uses Opus 88's signature eyedropper filling system, with a center bar that regulates ink flow — a feature traditionally reserved for high-end eyedropper pens. An ebonite piston and rubber gasket seal the feed off from the barrel when fully tightened, reducing the risk of leaks or ink burping, a common drawback of eyedropper-filled pens generally. To open ink flow for writing, loosen the rod inside the body by twisting the knob at the end of the barrel counterclockwise; for long writing sessions or flex writing, keep the valve open. Maximum ink capacity is approximately 2.97 ml, several times what a standard converter holds.

To fill: unscrew the grip section from the barrel, use the included glass pipette to draw ink, deposit it into the barrel, and reassemble.

Nib Options

The Classic Jazz is fitted with a #6 JoWo stainless steel nib, available in all four colors in seven variants:

• Extra Fine (EF) — a precise, controlled line for small handwriting
• Fine (F) — the most versatile everyday width
• Medium (M) — broader and wetter, good for shading inks
• Broad (B) — a bold, generous line
• 1.5 mm Stub — an italic-style grind adding crisp line variation to every stroke
• Flex Extra Fine — a responsive nib that widens under pressure, fine at rest
• Flex Fine — the same flexible response with a slightly broader baseline

Opus 88 nibs tend to write slightly broader than equivalent Japanese sizes — if you usually reach for a Pilot or Sailor fine, consider sizing down one step.
