The Opus 88 Demo 2020 Color takes the brand's signature demonstrator design and adds a scattering of colorful acrylic flakes suspended through the clear resin — the effect is bright, optimistic, and genuinely one of a kind on every pen, since no two flake patterns turn out the same. It keeps everything the Demo does well: full visibility of ink, mechanism, and fill level, in a body that's unmistakably playful rather than purely clinical.

Design & Construction

The Demo's form is straightforward and well-proportioned: a straight-sided barrel and cap with flat finials, giving the pen a clean, architectural silhouette that sits comfortably in the hand for long writing sessions. Capped, the pen measures approximately 147 mm; uncapped, approximately 137 mm. Maximum diameter is approximately 16.5 mm, with a grip diameter of approximately 11.7 mm. Weight is approximately 27 g — light enough for extended writing without fatigue. A polished chrome clip completes the pen. Note that the Demo does not post — the cap does not attach to the end of the barrel — so the length you write with is the uncapped length.

The pen ships in an Opus 88 gift box with a glass eyedropper pipette included for filling.

Eyedropper Filling System & Shut-Off Valve

The Demo 2020 Color uses a full Japanese-style eyedropper filling system, with the entire barrel functioning as an ink reservoir — capacity runs approximately 3.4–3.5 ml, several times what a standard converter holds. An integrated shut-off valve, controlled by a twist knob at the base of the barrel, seals ink above the feed when closed, preventing the thermal expansion that can push ink through the nib when a warm pen is uncapped or carried. Open, it allows steady, controlled flow from barrel to nib.

To fill: unscrew the grip section from the barrel, draw ink into the included glass pipette, deposit it into the barrel, and reassemble. Apply a thin layer of silicone grease to the barrel threads before closing to ensure a leak-free seal. The pen uses bottled ink only — no cartridges or converters are compatible with this filling system.

Nib Options

The Demo 2020 Color is fitted with a #6 JoWo stainless steel nib, replaceable and available in:

• Extra Fine (EF) — a controlled, precise line for small handwriting or detailed annotation
• Fine (F) — the most versatile everyday option for most writing styles
• Medium (M) — a broader, wetter line that brings out shading and sheen in expressive inks
• Broad (B) — a bold, generous line
• 1.5 mm Stub — a broad italic-style nib adding crisp line variation to every stroke

Opus 88 nibs tend to write slightly broader than equivalent Japanese sizes — if you usually reach for a Pilot or Sailor fine, consider sizing down one step.
