A Garden Caught Mid-Bloom

Only 392 of these exist. The Opus 88 Jazz "A Spring Morning" (曉春 / Xiaochun) is a limited-edition release from the Taipei brand's cigar-shaped Jazz line, and it wears its name literally: a translucent green resin barrel printed with a spring tree scene — birds, ladybugs, butterflies, and drifting leaves — with each pen's pattern falling slightly differently across the resin. A bright spring-green cap, grip, and blind cap frame the illustration in polished silver trim. This is not a pen you write with quietly in the background. It is a small garden you carry in a pen case.

Design & Construction

The Jazz silhouette is soft and rounded rather than angular — a cigar-shaped body with gently tapered ends that sits comfortably in the hand across long writing sessions. Unlike some eyedropper pens in this category, the Jazz cap can be posted, so you can choose your preferred writing length. Capped, the pen measures approximately 151.5 mm; uncapped, approximately 134 mm; posted, approximately 173 mm. Weight is approximately 28 g, with a grip diameter of approximately 11.2 mm — substantial in hand without tipping into heavy.

The pen ships in an Opus 88 gift box with a glass eyedropper pipette included for filling.

Eyedropper Filling System & Shut-Off Valve

Like other Opus 88 pens, the Jazz uses a Japanese-style eyedropper system with an integrated shut-off valve, controlled by twisting the blind cap at the end of the barrel. Closed, the valve seals the reservoir and protects against the ink expansion that heat and altitude can cause — useful for pens that travel, including by air. Open, ink flows freely to the feed. Total ink capacity is approximately 2.97 ml, several times what a standard converter holds.

To fill: unscrew the grip section from the barrel, use the included glass pipette to draw ink, deposit it into the barrel, and reassemble. Hold the pen nib-down and turn the end knob counterclockwise to release trapped air, then clockwise to draw ink into the feed until it stops. Wipe any excess ink from the nib before writing.

Nib Options

The Jazz "A Spring Morning" is fitted with a #6 JoWo stainless steel nib, available in:

  • Extra Fine (EF) — precise and controlled, suited to small handwriting
  • Fine (F) — the most versatile everyday choice
  • Medium (M) — broader and wetter, good for bringing out shading in expressive inks
  • Broad (B) — a bold, wet line for writers who want presence on the page
  • 1.5 mm Stub — an italic-style grind adding crisp line variation to every stroke

Opus 88 nibs tend to write slightly broader than equivalent Japanese sizes — if you normally reach for a Pilot or Sailor fine, consider sizing down one step.

Ink Display

The translucent green resin makes this pen a genuine showcase for ink. Shading inks reveal their tonal range through the barrel; sheening inks catch light as the pen turns in hand; shimmering inks scatter their particles visibly against the printed garden scene beneath. If you own an ink you're proud of, this is a pen built to show it off.
