A Small Pen About a Big Feeling

The Opus 88 Mini Pocket Hugging pen is a collaboration between Opus 88 and illustrator Soupy Tang, drawing its artwork from her book "How Old Is Apple?" — a heartwarming illustration of two friends caught in a cozy embrace. The design carries across both the white cap and the clear frosted barrel, framed by bold black end caps and silver-toned accents, so the scene reads as one continuous moment rather than two separate prints. It's a pen built around warmth, friendship, and quiet comfort — small enough to carry everywhere, and sentimental enough to mean something while you do.

Design & Construction

The Mini Pocket's proportions are built for portability first: capped, the pen measures approximately 117.3 mm; the body alone is approximately 107.7 mm, with the cap adding approximately 49.5 mm. Body diameter is approximately 14.5 mm, cap diameter approximately 14.7 mm, and grip diameter approximately 11.7 mm — small enough to disappear into a pocket or pencil case, while still comfortable to write with. Weight is approximately 24 g. The screw-on cap can be posted to extend the pen's length for longer writing sessions, and a polished chrome clip completes the design. Note that Opus 88 Mini Pocket pens do not post securely for extended writing — the cap rests on rather than locks onto the barrel end.

The pen ships in an Opus 88 gift box with a glass eyedropper pipette, spare O-ring, and instruction manual included.

Eyedropper Filling System & Shut-Off Valve

Despite its compact size, the Hugging pen holds a generous 1.5 ml of ink through a Japanese-style eyedropper system with an integrated shut-off valve. To fill, unscrew the grip section, use the included glass eyedropper to draw ink, and deposit it into the barrel — leaving a little room for air pressure helps prevent leaks. Before writing, unscrew the blind cap at the end of the barrel to release the internal shut-off mechanism and allow ink to flow to the nib; retighten it before travel to seal the ink chamber, reassuring for a pen that's likely to live in a bag or a pocket.

The Hugging pen is fitted with a #5 JoWo stainless steel nib, available in:

• Extra Fine (EF) — a precise, controlled line for small handwriting
• Fine (F) — the most versatile everyday width
• Medium (M) — broader and wetter, good for shading inks
• Broad (B) — a bold, generous line
• 1.4 mm Stub — an italic-style grind adding crisp line variation to every stroke
