Tono & Lims DEEEP FIELD Great Attractor — 30ml Fountain Pen Ink
Tono & Lims DEEEP FIELD Great Attractor is a 30ml fountain pen ink inspired by one of the most mysterious structures in the observable universe — the Great Attractor, a gravitational anomaly pulling hundreds of thousands of galaxies, including the Milky Way, toward a single region of space at 600 kilometres per second. We cannot see it directly; it lies hidden behind the dense star fields of our own galaxy. Yet its pull is undeniable. Great Attractor, the ink, behaves much the same way: its yellow base draws the eye immediately, but the complexity beneath — orange, brown, and unexpected blue-grey — reveals itself only as the ink dries.
Released as part of the DEEEP FIELD series at the 2026 Mitsukoshi Stationery Festival in Japan, Great Attractor is one of Tono & Lims' most conceptually resonant inks to date.
Available at Shosai (shosai.ca) in Gatineau / Ottawa — with in-store pickup (J9J 0K6) and Canada-wide shipping.
What Makes Great Attractor Different
Yellow fountain pen inks are rare. Yellow inks with genuine chroma-separating complexity are rarer still. Great Attractor is not simply a yellow ink — it is a yellow ink that refuses to stay yellow.
Its separating properties mean the ink fractures as it dries, pulling apart into distinct colour zones across the same stroke. The effect is not shimmer. It is not sheen. It is the ink's own pigment chemistry unfolding across the page, the way gravitational forces pull different galactic structures in different directions — all toward the same invisible centre.
Colour Profile
Base Colour
Great Attractor presents as a green-yellow tone in the bottle — an unusual, slightly murky warmth that hints at the complexity to come. On the page, however, the green-yellow settles into a clear, warm yellow as the dominant base colour.
Dry Shift & Chroma Separation
As Great Attractor dries, its chroma-separating formula begins to pull the yellow base apart:
- Orange — appearing at the ink's densest pooling points and stroke centres
- Brown — emerging in transitional zones between wet and dry areas
- Blue-grey — surfacing at stroke edges and in the lightest passes, the most unexpected and visually dramatic element of the separation
The presence of blue-grey in a yellow-based ink is what makes Great Attractor genuinely singular. It mirrors the astronomical phenomenon itself: the attractor cannot be seen directly, but its influence bends everything around it in unexpected directions.
The Cosmic Effect
The full separation — yellow dissolving into orange and brown, with blue-grey appearing at the periphery — maps visually onto the gravitational structure that inspired it. Dense areas mirror the mass concentration of the attractor itself; lighter strokes capture the stretched, distorted galactic filaments being drawn toward it. Your writing becomes a record of that invisible force.
Ink Properties at a Glance
Shading
★★★★☆ — Excellent. Shading is the ink's defining quality, with a visible tonal gradient from light to deep yellow within each stroke. On wider nibs and slower-absorbing papers, the gradient deepens noticeably, creating rich variation across longer strokes and broad letterforms.
Shimmer
None. Great Attractor contains no metallic shimmer particles. It is fully safe for fine nibs, vintage pens, and pens with narrow ink channels. No clogging risk, no shimmer settling in the bottle over time.
Sheen
None. Like others in the DEEEP FIELD series, Great Attractor channels its visual drama entirely into colour separation rather than surface metallic sheen. The complexity lives within the ink film itself.
Flow & Behaviour
Water-based and well-mannered, Great Attractor flows smoothly through standard converters and cartridge-converter systems. Dry time is consistent with the broader Tono & Lims range — slightly extended on coated papers, which works in the ink's favour by allowing the chroma separation more time to develop fully before the film sets.
How to Get the Most Out of Great Attractor
Recommended Paper
Paper choice is the single greatest variable in how dramatically Great Attractor's colour separation expresses itself. For maximum effect:
- Tomoe River (52gsm or 68gsm) — slow absorption allows full chroma separation to develop; all four colour zones become visible simultaneously
- Midori MD Paper — creamy surface with excellent pooling; warm paper tone complements the yellow-orange palette
- Rhodia / Clairefontaine — reliable separation across both formats; a dependable everyday option
- Cosmo Air Light — exceptional for those seeking the full yellow-to-blue-grey spread in a single stroke
Avoid highly absorbent papers (standard copy paper, Moleskine). Fast absorption compresses the colour gradient before it has time to separate, reducing the multi-tonal effect to a flat, unremarkable yellow.
Recommended Nibs
- Medium to Broad nibs — more ink deposited means more visible separation across the full colour range
- Stub or Italic nibs — the contrast between thick and thin strokes creates multiple tonal zones within each letter; particularly striking for the orange-to-blue-grey transition
- Flex nibs — ink flow variation under pressure produces dramatic shifts from yellow through to brown in a single downstroke
- Fine nibs — will show the yellow-to-blue-grey shift on quality paper, with a more refined, restrained expression
Recommended Uses
- Journaling and long-form writing — the colour separation rewards sustained writing; pages develop a warm, layered character over time
- Hand lettering and calligraphy — every stroke carries its own tonal arc, from yellow entry to orange and brown depth
- Illustrated journaling and wash work — diluted with water, Great Attractor produces multi-tonal yellow washes with unexpected cool undertones
- Swatching and ink documentation — the yellow-to-blue-grey range photographs exceptionally well; the separation reads clearly across all lighting conditions
Pairing With the DEEEP FIELD Series
Tono & Lims suggests pairing Great Attractor with Oort Swirl, another ink in the DEEEP FIELD series. The two inks occupy different ends of the colour spectrum, and their chroma-separating formulas create complementary layering effects when used across the same page or journal spread.
About the DEEEP FIELD Series
The DEEEP FIELD series is Tono & Lims' most technically ambitious regular line. Each ink takes its name and conceptual identity from a specific astronomical phenomenon — from the Oort Cloud at the outermost edge of our solar system to the invisible gravitational structures that shape the large-scale architecture of the universe. The series is defined by its use of chroma-separating pigment technology, giving every ink a multi-tonal character unavailable in conventional single-pigment formulations.
Great Attractor sits at the hidden, gravitational heart of the series — the phenomenon that cannot be observed directly, only inferred from its effects on everything around it.
