Tono & Lims Sea of Illusion — 30ml Fountain Pen Ink
Tono & Lims Sea of Illusion is a 30ml limited edition fountain pen ink built around a deep, saturated navy blue with a cool blue-grey base. This is not a simple dark blue. Sea of Illusion occupies a precise tonal position — cool, composed, and deliberate — without veering toward purple, teal, or black. Its defining characteristic is its medium shading: on quality paper, each stroke reveals a visible gradient from lighter blue to deep navy, giving the ink a quiet depth that rewards attentive writing.
Originally released as part of Tono & Lims' earlier catalogue and later revisited as a Remastered edition through select international channels, Sea of Illusion remains a limited and sought-after ink. It is a navy blue for writers who want more than flatness — but without the visual complexity of shimmer, sheen, or chroma separation.
Available at Shosai (shosai.ca) in Gatineau / Ottawa — with in-store pickup (J9J 0K6) and Canada-wide shipping.
What Makes Sea of Illusion Different
Navy blue is one of the most populated categories in fountain pen ink. Every major brand offers at least one. What separates Sea of Illusion from the field is not a dramatic special effect — it is the quality and consistency of its shading, and the precision of its colour position.
Where many navy blues collapse into near-black at their darkest or fade to a washed-out grey-blue at their lightest, Sea of Illusion maintains a coherent identity across the full tonal range of each stroke. The light areas read as clear, cool blue. The dark areas read as rich, deep navy. The gradient between them is smooth and natural — visible enough to add interest, controlled enough to remain professional.
There are no shimmer particles. There is no sheen. The ink's entire visual argument is made through colour and shading alone.
Colour Profile
Base Colour
Sea of Illusion is a deep navy blue with a cool blue-grey cast. In the bottle, it presents as a rich, saturated dark blue — neither warm nor greenish, but distinctly cool and composed. On the page, the blue-grey base gives the dried ink a slightly restrained quality that keeps it from reading as a flat, heavy navy. The colour sits at approximately RGB 93, 133, 188 — a mid-dark blue that retains clear blue identity at all ink densities.
Shading
Medium shading — the ink's most notable visual characteristic. On smooth, slow-absorbing papers such as Tomoe River, Sea of Illusion produces a clearly visible tonal gradient within each stroke: lighter cool blue at the stroke's thinner passages, deepening to rich navy at the densest points. The shading is consistent and reliable, becoming more pronounced with broader nibs and wetter writers. It is not the extreme, dramatic shading of a dedicated shading ink, but it is stable, attractive, and one of the primary reasons this ink has retained its following across multiple releases.
Sheen
None. Across standard testing on quality papers and at multiple viewing angles, Sea of Illusion produces no metallic edge sheen — no red, purple, or other reflective overlay on dried strokes. The ink dries to pure navy blue, undistracted by surface effects.
Shimmer
None. Sea of Illusion is a standard dye-based ink containing no metallic or iridescent shimmer particles. It is fully safe for fine nibs, vintage pens, and pens with narrow ink channels. No clogging risk, no particles settling in the bottle over time.
Ink Properties at a Glance
Flow
Average. Sea of Illusion flows at a moderate, balanced rate through standard converters and cartridge-converter systems. It is neither notably wet nor notably dry — a reliable middle ground that suits a wide range of nib sizes and pen types without requiring adjustment.
Dry Time
Long — exceeding 60 seconds on quality paper such as Tomoe River under normal conditions. This is among the longer dry times in the Tono & Lims range and is worth factoring into your writing setup. On faster-absorbing papers, dry time will be shorter, though at the cost of reduced shading visibility. Left-handed writers and those who smudge easily should exercise particular caution and consider faster-absorbing paper or a finer nib.
Water Resistance
None. Sea of Illusion is a standard water-based dye ink with no water resistance. It will run, bleed, or fade when exposed to moisture. It is not suitable for documents requiring archival longevity or water resistance. For those applications, a pigment-based ink is recommended.
Feathering
Moderate on standard papers. On fountain-pen-friendly papers — Tomoe River, Rhodia, Clairefontaine, Midori MD — Sea of Illusion performs well with clean stroke edges. On standard copy paper or more absorbent papers, some feathering may occur. Paper choice is important for getting clean results with this ink.
How to Get the Most Out of Sea of Illusion
Recommended Paper
Paper choice directly determines how visible Sea of Illusion's medium shading will be. For the best results:
- Tomoe River (52gsm or 68gsm) — the gold standard for this ink; slow absorption maximises the tonal gradient and gives the full blue-to-navy shading range room to develop
- Midori MD Paper — smooth surface with good ink behaviour; the cool blue tone reads cleanly against the cream paper
- Rhodia / Clairefontaine — consistent, reliable results with clean edges; a dependable everyday pairing
- Cosmo Air Light — excellent clarity; the shading gradient is well-defined and the cool blue-grey character is clearly visible
Avoid highly absorbent papers (standard copy paper, Moleskine). Fast absorption compresses the tonal gradient before it develops, reduces shading visibility, and may cause feathering.
Recommended Nibs
- Medium to Broad nibs — the primary recommendation; more ink on the page means more visible shading across the full blue-to-navy range
- Stub or Italic nibs — the contrast between thick and thin strokes creates dramatic tonal variation within each letter; the shading effect is particularly striking in broader stroke sections
- Fine nibs — shading is more subtle but still present on quality paper; a good choice for those who want the colour without the full gradient effect
- Vintage pens — the complete absence of shimmer particles makes Sea of Illusion safe for older pens with delicate feeds and narrow ink channels
Recommended Uses
- Everyday writing and journaling — the medium shading gives sustained writing sessions a quiet visual rhythm; pages develop a layered, considered quality
- Professional correspondence — navy blue remains one of the most universally appropriate ink colours for formal writing; the shading adds distinction without sacrificing legibility
- Long-form note-taking — the cool, composed colour is easy on the eye; the shading provides visual interest without distraction
- Fountain pen photography and swatching — the blue-to-navy shading gradient photographs clearly under natural light; the cool tone reads well across a range of lighting conditions
About the Remastered Edition
Sea of Illusion was originally released as part of Tono & Lims' earlier catalogue before being revisited as a Remastered edition, available through select international and specialty channels. The Remastered version preserves the core colour identity and shading character of the original while reflecting Tono & Lims' ongoing refinement of their ink formulations. Both versions share the same essential profile — deep navy blue, medium shading, no shimmer, no sheen — with the Remastered edition representing the most current expression of the ink.
