Before Yamamoto Paper built out the Museum, Shape, and Map series, there was just this — the Basic Series, released in 2010, no illustrated cover, no borrowed artwork, just a plain waxed kraft-style cover in a muted olive-brown and a genuinely useful grid inside. Everything else in the RO-BIKI catalogue is a variation built on top of what this notebook established first.

A grid that isn't quite a grid

Most gridded notebooks give you a flat lattice of identical lines. This one uses a 4.5mm square pattern with small cross marks at each intersection instead of solid lines — a lighter touch that suggests structure without boxing you in. It reads more like faint guide points than a rigid grid, which makes it genuinely useful for bullet journaling, diagramming, or sketching layouts where you want alignment without the page feeling ruled.

The same aging, minus the picture

The waxed cover develops the same creases, scuffs, and gradual darkening as every other RO-BIKI Note, but without a printed illustration competing for attention, the aging itself becomes the main visual interest — this is the version of the notebook where the wear pattern is the whole point, not a texture layered over someone else's artwork.

What's inside

Sixty pages of New Chiffon Cream paper, around 80g/m², handle fountain pens, dip pens, ballpoint, and pencil without much show-through. The binding is thread-stitched with glue reinforcement at the spine, letting the notebook open close to 180° flat — useful when you're actually drawing a layout across the gutter rather than staying on one side of the page.

Sizing and what it pairs with

At 91 × 210mm, it's the same long, narrow shape as Yamamoto's Map Series notebooks, and fits the same systems: Yamamoto's own RO-BIKI Canvas Cover, regular-size Traveler's Notebook covers, and similar long-format organizers. It's built for regular-size TN covers, not passport-size.
