Yamamoto Paper RO-BIKI Note Basic Series — 5mm Reticle

The reticle that's lighter than a grid, but not quite a dot

Yamamoto's Basic Series comes in a handful of ruling styles, and this one — 5mm reticle — sits in an odd, useful middle ground. It's not a solid grid like the 4.5mm version, and it's not a plain dot grid either. Each intersection is marked with a small dot and a fine cross rather than a printed line, so the page carries just enough structure to keep handwriting level and diagrams aligned, without the visual weight of an actual grid pattern underneath everything you write.

Why this particular ruling shows up in a lot of "favourite notebook" lists

Among people who've tried several RO-BIKI ruling variants, the 5mm reticle comes up disproportionately often as the one they keep going back to — it's unobtrusive enough for plain handwriting, but structured enough to sketch a quick chart or keep a list of items lined up without a ruler. If you've found dot grids too vague and full grids too busy, this sits in the gap between the two.

The cover, and what happens to it

The wax-treated cover here runs in a warm tan-beige rather than the darker olive-brown of the 4.5mm grid version — over time it develops the same creasing, scuffing, and gradual darkening as every RO-BIKI cover, so the lighter starting tone means the aging is more visually apparent early on than it is on a darker colourway.

Built the same way as the rest of the Basic Series

Sixty pages of New Chiffon Cream paper, around 80g/m², resist bleed-through well across fountain pens, dip pens, ballpoint, and pencil. The thread-and-glue binding lets the notebook lie close to flat, and at 91 × 210mm it fits the same systems as the rest of Yamamoto's long-format notebooks: the RO-BIKI Canvas Cover, or a regular-size (not passport-size) Traveler's Notebook.
