The one Museum Series cover that isn't a picture of anything

Every other notebook in Yamamoto's Museum Series puts something recognizable on the cover — a canal, a garden, a river crossing. This one is different. It carries In Blue (Im Blau), painted in 1925 by Wassily Kandinsky, one of the artists generally credited with founding abstract art as a movement. There's no landscape or figure to identify here — just geometric forms, biomorphic shapes, and a blue field that Kandinsky arranged according to color theory and musical structure rather than anything observed from life. The original hangs in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Why abstraction changes what aging looks like

Every RO-BIKI Note cover develops creases and scuffing with use — that's built into the wax paper Yamamoto uses across the entire line. On a landscape or a portrait, that wear reads as patina layered over a recognizable scene. On a Kandinsky composition built from flat color and hard geometry, the same creasing behaves more like it's part of the composition itself — a crease running through a triangle looks almost intentional, the way it wouldn't on a woodblock print of a river crossing.

What's inside, apart from the cover

Sixty pages of 5mm dot grid sit on chiffon cream writing paper, roughly 75g/m², selected by a company that ran a paper wholesale business for decades before ever printing a notebook cover. It takes fountain pen ink cleanly, and the thread-stitched saddle binding lets it open flat rather than fighting you at the spine — worth knowing if you sketch as often as you write in it.

Passport-sized, and useful beyond just being small

At 88 × 125mm, it matches a Japanese passport and slides into a passport-size Traveler's Notebook cover as a refill, or works completely fine on its own with no cover at all. If you're already collecting other Museum Series notebooks, this is the one that reads noticeably different on a shelf next to the rest.
