A view of Venice painted for a British consul, now sized for a coat pocket
This edition of Yamamoto Paper's RO-BIKI Note Museum Series carries Canaletto's The Grand Canal, Venice, Looking Southeast, with the Campo della Carità to the Right across its wax paper cover. Canaletto painted it as part of a series of twenty panoramic Venice views commissioned by Joseph Smith, the British consul in Venice at the time and one of the artist's most important patrons — the kind of documentary-precision cityscape that made Canaletto's work popular with wealthy British visitors doing the Grand Tour. The vantage point closely matches what you'd see today standing on the Accademia Bridge, looking down the canal toward the Campo della Carità.
Precision on the cover, imperfection with use
Canaletto was known for near-architectural accuracy — straight lines, exact proportions, careful light. That's an interesting contrast to what happens to this notebook once you start carrying it: the wax-treated paper cover creases, scuffs, and darkens with handling, the same way it does across the rest of the RO-BIKI line. A perfectly composed 18th-century cityscape slowly acquiring a texture of daily use is part of the appeal — the notebook stops looking like a printed reproduction and starts looking like something you actually own.
What's inside, beyond the cover
Sixty pages of 5mm dot grid sit on chiffon cream writing paper, roughly 75–80g/m², chosen by a company that ran a paper wholesale business for decades before making notebooks — it takes fountain pen ink cleanly, without heavy feathering, and dries fast enough for note-taking on the move. The binding is thread-stitched with a saddle stitch, so the notebook opens flat rather than fighting you at the spine.
Passport-sized, and passport-compatible
At 88 × 125mm, this matches the footprint of a Japanese passport and slides into a passport-size Traveler's Notebook cover as a refill, if you already run that system. It also holds up perfectly well on its own — no cover required — for anyone who wants a compact travel notebook with a bit more visual history behind it than a plain kraft insert.
