A print technique doing the work, not a painting

Most of Yamamoto Paper's RO-BIKI Note covers borrow their imagery from somewhere else — museum paintings, maps, textures. Shape Series does the opposite: it's built entirely around a printing technique Yamamoto developed in-house. Before waxing, the cover is printed with two distinct zones — areas that get a white undercoat first, and areas that don't. Once the wax finish is applied over both, the undercoated sections stay opaque while the bare sections turn semi-transparent, letting the deep forest-green base color show through. The flying birds motif exists specifically to show off that contrast: a flock of pale silhouettes cutting across a solid, matte-green field.

What that means as the cover ages

Because the birds are defined by transparency rather than ink density, the way this cover wears in is a little different from a straightforward printed design. Creases and scuffs from handling interact with both the opaque and translucent zones, so the contrast between the "solid" birds and the visible-through areas shifts slightly over months of carry — less like a photograph fading, more like a woodblock print picking up wear in its grain.

The rest of the notebook, same DNA as the Museum Series

Underneath the cover technique, the specs match the rest of the RO-BIKI Note lineup: 60 pages of 5mm dot grid on chiffon cream writing paper around 75g/m², thread-stitched with a saddle stitch so it opens flat, sized at 88 × 125mm to match a Japanese passport. It takes fountain pen ink cleanly, which matters here as much as it does on any RO-BIKI cover — Yamamoto built its reputation as a paper wholesaler before it ever printed a cover.

Where it fits if you already run a notebook system

At passport size, it slides into a passport-size Traveler's Notebook cover as a refill, or works completely on its own with no cover at all. The muted, almost military green reads less "collectible art piece" and more "notebook you'd actually reach for daily" — a reasonable pairing if you want something plainer-looking sitting next to a Museum Series notebook in the same TN system.
