Bank Paper wasn't designed with fountain pen enthusiasts in mind at all. Mitsubishi Paper Mills developed it in 1960 specifically for bank ledger use — a job that demanded a very particular set of properties: it had to take ink cleanly from whatever pen a clerk happened to be using, hold up to daily handling in an office, and stay legible for records that needed to last. That utilitarian origin is exactly why it works so well decades later for an entirely different audience.

Built to be written on from both sides

The paper's raw material is a proprietary cotton-and-pulp blend, chosen specifically to raise opacity enough that writing on one side doesn't show through to the other — a requirement for a ledger sheet that gets written on both faces, and a quietly useful property for anyone journaling or writing letters who doesn't want the reverse side to look cluttered before they've even reached it. Every sheet carries a "Three Diamonds" watermark, Mitsubishi's own mark, visible when held to light.

What the extra weight buys you

At 66.3gsm, this sits noticeably heavier than the ultra-thin Tomoe River-style papers in Yamamoto's lineup — closer to what a fountain pen user would call "standard" weight, but engineered with far more attention to ink behavior than typical office paper gets. It's smooth enough to keep fine nibs gliding without catching, dries fast enough to avoid smearing under a moving hand, and handles a wide range of pens rather than favoring one type over another.

A ruled guide sheet, not a ruled page

Like Yamamoto's other writing pads, the paper itself is plain — no printed lines. A double-sided guide sheet (6mm graph on one side, 12mm ruled on the other) sits underneath the stack, visible through the paper as a writing reference. That means every sheet in the pad comes off genuinely blank, useful if you want to keep, frame, or scan pages without a printed grid competing with your handwriting.
