In 2021, Tomoegawa — the company that had manufactured Tomoe River paper for decades — announced it was shutting down the production line and selling the rights to the paper entirely. For a paper this well known in the fountain pen world, that news set off genuine panic buying; people who'd built their journaling habits around this exact sheet weren't sure it would exist again. Sanzen Paper, part of the Chuetsu Pulp Group, picked up production later that year and began shipping their own version under the Tomoe River name that November. This writing pad uses that Sanzen-made paper — the current continuation of the sheet, not the discontinued original, but manufactured to the same 52gsm specification that made the paper famous in the first place.

Why this particular paper matters to fountain pen users

Tomoe River paper's reputation comes from an unusual combination: it's thin enough to feel almost translucent, yet it resists feathering and bleed-through far better than paper that light has any right to. Ink pools slightly as it dries on the surface rather than sinking straight in, which is what produces the sheen and shading that ink reviewers and collectors specifically chase this paper out for. A wet, well-saturated fountain pen ink shows its full character on this surface in a way most everyday paper simply won't reveal.

Ruled lines that aren't actually printed on the page

Because the paper is translucent, this pad doesn't print ruling directly onto each sheet — it uses a ruled underlay card instead, visible through the paper as a writing guide but not permanently marked onto it.
