Guitar by Teranishi: A Century of Colour from Osaka

Founded in Osaka in 1916, Teranishi Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. is one of Japan's most enduring names in ink and writing instruments. What began as a fountain pen ink manufacturer over a century ago has grown into a beloved institution among stationery enthusiasts worldwide — all while remaining rooted in the same city, the same craft, and the same commitment to colour that defined its origins. At Shosai, we are proud to carry the Guitar line, the brand's flagship fine stationery range, here in Ottawa-Gatineau.

The Guitar Name

Guitar products are instantly recognizable by their vintage-inflected branding and the iconic Guitar logo — a name and mark that have appeared on Japanese stationery for generations. The Guitar line represents the creative and artisanal side of Teranishi's century-long heritage: products designed not merely to function, but to delight. Whether you are drawn in by the jewel-toned inks or the elegant sweep of a glass nib, Guitar rewards a slower, more intentional approach to writing.

Glass Pens

Guitar's glass pens are handcrafted writing instruments that bring a quiet, ceremonial quality to the act of writing. Each pen features a precision-formed glass nib with delicate spiral channels that draw ink through capillary action — no cartridges, no converters, only the nib and the ink of your choice. Their transparent construction makes them as beautiful to look at as they are to use, and they are compatible with any fountain pen ink, making them ideal for sampling, sketching, or calligraphy.

Glass pens are available now at Shosai.

Fountain Pen Inks

Guitar's fountain pen inks are the product of more than a hundred years of ink-making expertise. The flagship Guitar Taisho Roman Haikara Ink series draws its inspiration from the Taisho era (1912–1926), a period of cultural flourishing in Japan when Western influences blended with Japanese aesthetics to produce something entirely distinctive. The 16-colour lineup — with names like Opera Rose, Smoky Navy, Nostalgic Honey, and Salon de Violet — reflects that spirit: evocative, richly chromatic, and finely tuned for fountain pen performance.

Each 40 ml bottle comes with a small tag that can be used as a colour swatch card, a thoughtful detail that speaks to the care Teranishi brings to the writing experience. The inks are water-based dye inks known for their vivid saturation and smooth flow, frequently compared by enthusiasts to premium Japanese inks at a more accessible price point.

Guitar inks are coming soon to Shosai.
